The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology caters to a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services for women with general obstetric and gynaecologic problems in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, as well as in four secondary hospitals in Karachi and Hyderabad. It offers sub-specialty services in maternal-fetal medicine, urogynaecology, gynaecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, subfertility, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries.

The Department has a strong academic portfolio including undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes. It is also actively involved in hospital-based as well as community-based research.


You will provide dynamic leadership to the department and will have overall responsibility for the conduct of its academic, research and service mandate consistent with the mission and policies of AKU and AKUH, inclusive of its secondary hospitals and other outreach facilities incorporated within the Hospital.


You must have suitable post-graduate medical qualifications with extensive academic track record of publications and securing grants preferably from extramural sources, along with clinical, administrative and leadership experience in a teaching hospital.

Highly motivated candidates with an excellent track record are invited to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate which requires education to PhD level in a subject related to biomedical sciences. The project is to work on a 3-year MRC Newton Fund Research Partnership Project with the National Institute of Medical Science and Nutrition Mexico City entitled: ‘Interventions to Improve Maternal Metabolic Profile and Prevent Cardio-Metabolic and Behavioural Deficits in Future Generations Due to Programming by Maternal Obesity’. Dr Zambrano’s team in Mexico and Dr Taylor’s group at King’s College London have worked in the field of developmental programming for many years and have a shared interest in pharmacological and lifestyle interventions to improve maternal metabolic profile in obese pregnancy and prevent cardio-metabolic and behavioural deficits in the offspring. The teams have identified candidate probiotic and nutraceutical compounds, and will employ complementary rodent models to advance understanding of the efficacy and safety of these compounds in improving maternal metabolic profiles in obese pregnancy and their disease-preventive potential for cardiovascular (high blood pressure) metabolic (obesity and diabetes) and behavioural deficits (cognitive function and ADHD) in future generations.

Experience in physiological or behavioural science and possession of an appropriate Home Office licence; research experience of in vivo techniques and practical skills in molecular biology techniques would be beneficial but not essential.

The selection process will include competency based questions and a panel interview.
